Richmond Athletic FC is a New Zealand soccer club, based in the South Island town of Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand. Their home ground is Jubilee Park.
Formed in 1948, Richmond Athletic changed its name to Richmond City in 2005.[1] In 2006 they won the local league and entered the play-offs for promotion to the Mainland Premier League, beating both Burnside FC and Avon United on aggregate. They lasted only two years before being relegated from the division following an aggregate loss to Christchurch United in the play-off. Following their demotion they reverted to their original name of Richmond Athletic.[1]
Richmond Athletic again earned the right to a promotion play-off in 2010, losing on aggregate after a 4-2 1st leg home win, and an away loss of 3-0.[1]
Richmond have reached round four of the Chatham Cup on several occasions, 1966, 1968, 1969 and 1977.
Richmond reached round three of the Chatham Cup in 2011 after knocking out Nelson Suburbs 2-1, however they lost to Coastal Spirit 5-3.
Richmond have managed to win the Nelson Pine Division 1 League back to back in 2010 and 2011 and were set to take on FC Twenty 11 in a two leg play-off for promotion to the Mainland league in 2012.
Coach Steve Bignall and Manager Rick Gower decided to both leave the club at the end of the 2011 season, having won the league back to back in 2010 and 2011. Both have since accepted the first team coach and manager job for the 2012 season at new formed club FC Nelson, which is a merger of Nelson United, Nelson City, Metro and Tahuna.
